A Spook Remembers
(With a smile and a tear)
There’s a smile on his face
As he sits in his chair.
With a tear in his eye,
Towards the sky does he stare.
He will talk of his service
In round about ways,
He’s been sworn to keep secrets
All of his days.
The sites where he served,
Have been closed for a while.
But they’re open in mind
That accounts for his smile.
His shipmates as real
As when he was there,
But their names slowly slip
From his mind to the air.
Whether wearing OD
Or dungaree blue,
They were his shipmates
And to them he is true.
His years as a spook
Were his proudest of all.
His lips they were sealed,
Ears and mind were on call.
“They Served in Silence”
The engraved words do say
The thoughts of these shipmates
Bring the tear on this day
