NAVAL SPOOKS - "CT SAND CRABS"

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DAY

Veterans Day is the present day American name for a day formerly called Armistice Day. The day is November 11th and is observed on the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that formally ended World War I. It is now a federal and a state holiday in all 50 states of the United States of America. World War I formally ended on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of the year of 1918.

Originally named Armistice Day, it was first celebrated in the United States of America in 1919. Many states made it a legal holiday at that time. It was made a nationwide legal holiday in 1938.

On November 11, 1953, people in Emporia, Kansas observed what they called “Veterans Day” instead of Armistice Day. The state of Kansas led a movement to officially change the name of the day to Veterans Day - in honor of all veterans who honorably served in the armed forces of the United States of America in all wars. The change from Armistice Day to Veterans Day was officially made in June of 1954.

This holiday has since evolved into a day for honoring primarily living veterans who honorably served in the United States armed forces during wartime and peacetime. It now compliments Memorial Day which primarily honors deceased veterans of the United States of America.
